What are your options, and why should you consider it?

When choosing a motor, sure, you could go with an off-the-shelf product – rotary motors come in plenty of sizes, and you could always find one with “close enough” specs to meet your requirements. But when you’re planning to manufacture a new product on a large scale, likely it makes sense to make sure every aspect of the motor – from size and shape to power and precision – is designed specifically to meet your and your customers’ needs.

Here are two reasons why you should consider customizing your motor:

  1. You have very specific requirements.

    If you need to be able to reach specific conditions during the operation of your equipment or need to fit a motor into a specific shape or size space, it may be worth it to discuss your options with an engineer. Any time you start messing with physical elements of the motor, there may be changes to the power, force, or torque output, so it’s important to make sure every aspect is up to specification.

  2. You need a proprietary product.

    Everyone wants to manufacture products as inexpensively as they can, but when you purchase a standard motor, anyone else can buy that same motor – including your competition. When you customize your motor, that design is protected, so your business is the only one that can access that specific motor. This helps reduce competition and would-be knockoff businesses. This also protects your aftermarket business for additional revenue flow for spare motors, especially as the product reaches its end of life.

Once you’ve decided to go the custom route, here are some of the ways you can customize your direct-drive motor.

  1. Custom shaft – not only can you customize the motor’s shaft length and other dimensions, but you can also choose to adjust the shaft diameter to accommodate a gear pinion.
  2. Hollow shaft options – the micro direct-drive servo motors are available standard with a hollow shaft, but in addition, you can have the hollow bore expanded, it can be anodized, and you also have the option for tapping the hollow-shaft surface for load mounting.
  3. Flange and mounting customization – not only can you adjust the mounting options, but the flange shape and features can be customized.
